My daughter just graduated on Nov 8th from the NICU after 13 looong weeks. I will never forget nurse Colleen for taking the time to get me prepared to kangroo my baby for the first time. It took a good 20 minutes. Nurse Kelly who made a sign for my babies bed (I made one too). And nurse rachel for crocheting a preemie hat for my daughter. Most of the nurses were incredible.
ReplyDeleteMy baby girl Lyla was born 31 weeks 5 days gestation, weighing 3lbs 11oz, with the birth defect Gastroschisis. She was in the NICU for 104 days. And in and out of the hospital since, She is now 8 months, weighs 11lbs 7oz, and just had her 5th surgery. Lyla had two primary nurse, and it made it a lot easier for me, knowing she was with someone that knew all anout her history. they were great. After 2 months of not being able to carry her 2 feet from her bed because of her tubes. I came in and there was a big sign they made that said surprise and under it was a wagon. The nurse got a order from the doctor, saying I could take Lyla on a wagon rides around the unit, while she cycled her TPN. It was amazing! For the first time we weren't tyed down.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bridget for your reponse! That may be my FAVORITE moment in the NICU, when I get to hand a new mommy her baby for the first Kangaroo Care time! I actually cried once (super embarrasing ;) but the mommy was so excited that she started crying (tears of joy) so then I started crying.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Courtney! Primary nursing is great, except when 2 primaries happen to work the same day and both want to take care of baby :) And that was great getting Lyla a wagon for a little escape from the bed!
Forgot to mention, I love hearing about the positive things NICU nurses do or say that really impact a mommy for the best. I think it helps me grow as a nurse to hear these great stories. NICU moms are going through soooo much that they need peace and reassurance at thier babies bedside and that is one of my goals everyday I work.
Oh my gosh, the best thing a NICU nurse did for me was support me through the entire NICU journey and then continues to support me now that we are all home. She keeps in touch and has even come to visit us a couple times. It has made a world of difference in my life to have her as a friend because she truly understands what I am dealing with on a daily basis and was able to help me cope through my journey with my triplets. She is the nurse who made sure I was able to kangaroo for the first time with my daughter shortly after she was born. I didn't have to ask, she just got her out and said "Melissa would really like to spend time with her mommy and kangaroo." It was a beautiful moment of tears of joy for mommy, grandma and for our new nurse friend who we lovingly call grandma.
ReplyDeleteHow great that you keep in touch! And triplets, how amazing! Thanks Gretchen for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteMy twins were premature and I was at the time, a single mom. I lived 3 hours away from family and when they were born and placed in the NICU, only immediate family was admitted into the NICU to see them. My roommate wasnt related to me but she was my best friend (and even my daughers name sake) and a NICU nurse asked the director of the NICU for special permission to get her to be allowed to visit with my little girls. It was amazing she took the time to get us permission for something that was so simple but meant so much.
